It is a challenge to create a clear illustration of n-tier architecture.  Here are three very different images that explain the same thing but highlight different aspects of the technology.

Microsoft’s graphic stresses the ability to split n-tier applications between different computers on a network.  It includes the need for tools and operating systems to make the architecture work.
Lilly Software Associate’s graphic focuses on the building nature of the tiers to show how components of their product are segmented.  (Reproduced with permission from LSA)
